Biography

Sifu Corny Martens has always been passionate about martial arts.  He began his training in the martial arts at a young age as he was the 8th and final boy from a family of eleven. He began his formal training in the art of Traditional Wing Chun Kung Fu in 1995.  After two years, he began training full-time and began instructing classes with the goal of one day opening his own Kung Fu Academy.  Over the years, he studied Wing Chun in Kelowna, Calgary and Vancouver and had the honour of working with some great and talented Kung Fu practitioners.  He finished his training and received his Level 10 Instructors Certificate in January 2004, the highest awarded certification within the Traditional Wing Chun system. At this time, Martens went on to study a more contemporary variation of Wing Chun much more similar in manner to modern boxing.

Having a firm understanding of the principles and theory as well as having become proficient in the full aspect of the Kung Fu system, including it’s weapons, Martens went on to do his Teachers Training in Ashtanga Yoga in Calgary AB.

Martens is also a certified life skills coach.  He uses his understanding of group dynamics and intuition to determine the pace and flow of each kung fu class, thereby ensuring a safe and dynamic learning experience.

“I was certified as a Life Skills Coach in 2001. This has helped my ability to teach all ages and meet people where they are at.  I have excellent communication skills which is a necessity for any teacher. Furthermore, my experiences working with individuals with special needs has allowed me to become a more creative teacher, designing class plans to facilitate success in all individuals regardless of age, gender or other factors.

My passion for Wing Chun Kung Fu is as strong now as when I first discovered the art in 1995. I believe that this style of martial art has lasted through the centuries for a reason and I am motivated by genuine desire to share this art with the public. Despite challenges and adversities in my life, I have not only persevered with my training but have learned how to see such challenges and adversities as opportunities for self awareness and growth. As such, I have learned the patience and self discipline of an exceptional teacher.”
